Take Action for Clean Air in DE Delaware Chapter About The Delaware Chapter The Sierra Club dates back to 1892 and is the oldest and largest environmental advocacy organization in North America. Our mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet. Since 1992, the Delaware Chapter has blazed trails to protect the environment and to provide opportunities to enjoy and explore the natural beauty of our state. As a volunteer-run grassroots organization, we are working to protect our air and water quality and supporting state legislation and policies to reduce the negative impacts from climate change on those precious resources now and in the future. Help Support Offshore Wind! We had a big victory in committee last week (ICYMI: Our OSW bill was released from the Senate environment committee), but we can’t stop now. Here are three ways you can help support our wind bill and offshore wind generally. Attend our Lobby Day Join us for our annual Lobby Day at Legislative Hall in Dover on Thursday, May 16th from 9:30am-3pm. Since the bill made its way out of the Senate Environment committee, we are going to be meeting with key House Reps to ask for their support as it makes its way to the House Natural Resources & Energy committee for another vote. This is a CRUCIAL step in getting this bill passed so please join us if you can and share within your network so we can have a robust show of support for offshore wind. Register to join us: Tinyurl.com/Lobby-Day-24 Send Your Legislator an Email Please join us in emailing your legislators and letting them know that you want an offshore wind energy project for Delaware and you want it NOW! Your letter should be concise and personal. You do not need to write much; one or two sentences is enough. Here are a few talking points: Senate Bill 265, the Energy Solutions Act, is a common-sense approach to creating an offshore wind project that works for Delaware. Last year, Delaware passed the monumental Climate Solutions Act that set solid goals of 50% net reduction in emissions by 2030 and net-zero by 2050. Offshore wind will play a major role in meeting these goals. Our dependence on fossil fuels for energy production is a massive contributor to climate change and the pollution that threatens our planet and our state. Delaware is the only coastal state in the region not to have a plan to buy and develop power from offshore wind. If we act now, we can learn from the mis-steps and successes of earlier states to increase the benefit of a Delaware project. Offshore wind would allow us to truly move towards a greener future. Committing to offshore wind reduces the negative health impacts associated with the burning of fossil fuels. This means cleaner air and cleaner energy. A survey led by the Nature Conservancy found that around 77% of Delawareans support an offshore wind project for Delaware. Check out some of the great work we are doing in Delaware below and, if you want to get more involved in this kind of work, fill out our volunteer survey and one of our coordinators will be in touch! Protecting Air Quality in Delaware We have taken great steps in our state to clean up and protect our air, water, and soils, but there are constant efforts to roll back that progress. That is why the Delaware Chapter is always hard at work to both support policies to clean up and protect our air, water, and soils and stop any policies that threaten our state’s ability to protect public health and the environment. To learn more about these efforts and more, attend our Climate & Energy Public Meetings Securing Renewable Energy Resources Offshore wind energy alone has the ability to cover up to 30% of our energy deeds as a State if we do it right and we do it now. The Delaware Chapter is a member of People for Offshore Wind Energy Resources (POWER) , a coalition of people working to secure an offshore wind project for the First State. We are also pushing to ensure everyone has the right and ability to install solar at home or subscribe to a community solar project in Delaware to access the power of the sun as well! Amplifying Environmental Justice Efforts We strive to amplify the work of environmental justice advocates fighting for the right to clean air, water, and land in Delaware. We work with community members and organizations to improve the permitting process, address pollution in communities, advocate for smart and equitable land use, reduced energy burdens, and more. To learn more, attend our Environmental Justice Public Meetings , email the EJ Chair Willie Scott or Environmental Justice Associate Organizer Marissa McClenton .
